Gradient cabinet will be presented and revealed for the first time this year at the Biennale Interieur 2012 in Kortrijk. Gradient shows the personal belongings of their owner in a very unusual way. Chan uses special cords with a core of natural latex and a polyester cover. By winding this around a metal frame, the objects that are placed into the cabinet appear visually stimulating, almost like objects of Op Art. Through the lines the content partly is hidden, partly revealed. To get a good image of the objects in the cabinet, the viewer needs to interact with the objects by moving around the piece of furniture. Inside the cabinet, the objects appear to be floating by using clear hardened glass.

Gradient is a limited edition of three (+ 1 prototype + 1 AP) and available through
Galerie Judy Straten. Dimension: 200 x 66 x 56 cm.

Ka-Lai Chan describes her work: “The lines of the cabinet, which move from close to each other to further away are referring to the process of opening yourself to the outer world. Some objects are clearly visible, others (which are higher in the cabinet) require certain effort from the viewer before they can be fully discerned. One can put objects on the higher shelves to partly hide them, while partly showing them. This way you actually take a closer look at the content of the cabinet. Just as in real life, where you have to experience a person for a time to really get to know them.”

Ka-Lai Chan's most recent work is titled "The Ordinary Family" (2012). This a furniture collection, currently consisting of five pieces, is a carefully selected and modified group of used furniture and is partly inspired by stories of the designer’s own family or observations of families around her.
The furniture family includes a rocking horse, a coffee-table, a praying chair, a classical side table and the ‘No Sign of Design’ chair; a basic practical chair by the influential Dutch designer Richard Hutten.

Special thanks to Dutch brand nGispen who made the existence of the Vincent chair possible!! www.ngispen.com.

Chan creates frozen moments that can be interpreted as points in the personal lives of members of a family. For example, the classical side table, in which golden colored pearls have created a hole in the wood, refers to a young girl’s obsession with external psychical beauty. The spectacle of recycled plastic on the coffee-table melting through the tabletop was inspired by a parent, who cannot resist the temptation of alcohol and drugs, which ‘drag’ him down into a colorful, almost psychedelic depth.

The Ordinary Family represents a common human family. However, what we do not know is as with real families, each family itself has their own secrets and taboos...

<img src="http://payload25.cargocollective.com/1/3/96963/2811079/web_isabella2.jpg" width="576" height="384" width_o="576" height_o="384" src_o="http://payload25.cargocollective.com/1/3/96963/2811079/web_isabella2_o.jpg" data-mid="14274962" border="0" align="left"/>

<img src="http://payload25.cargocollective.com/1/3/96963/2811079/web_-theordinaryfamily_kalaichan.jpg" width="576" height="384" width_o="576" height_o="384" src_o="http://payload25.cargocollective.com/1/3/96963/2811079/web_-theordinaryfamily_kalaichan_o.jpg" data-mid="14275151" border="0" align="left"/>

KRISTALIA:
Kristalia is always looking for new talented designers, who can enhance its collection with innovative ideas, such as Ka-Lai Chan. SheLLf was created in Ka-Lai Chan’s studio as a limited edition design object, which then became a standard product thanks to Kristalia technology. A combination of rectangular units in different sizes, in MDF with lacquer finish, are connected with invisible 45° joints. The visual effect is dynamic and well-structured.
